To Plant or Not To Plant, That is The Question

Helllllo fellow cover croppers!

It's that time of year again to wonder whether you plant before the ground freezes or wait until it's workable again in spring.  I wanted to start a topic about this to get some people's experience with this.  Please be sure to include where you're at- the more detail the better!  (I'll go first)

The last few years we've been letting the cattle graze a little more selectively than we typically do during spring/summer, with hopes that we can eek out some seeds for self-selection of covers in the pasture.  That said, 2 years ago I planted an 8-way mix in mid October that did as I hoped and stayed dormant until March, where they broke waaaaay earlier than our neighbors plantings and even more than the perennials seem to have woken up.  I'm always nervous to put them in September, as we can get some warmer weather late Sept/early Oct and didn't want them all to pop and then immediately die.  We still don't have solid ground yet, so might still be fine timing to no-till in another mix.  How late to other people push the planting?
